Tequila industry plants more than 400 trees in La Primavera

More than 400 trees were planted Saturday in La Primavera Forest as part of a reforestation effort involving tequila companies, the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), environmental authorities and their families.

The activity was part of the Jalisco government’s 2026 State Reforestation Campaign, carried out through the Secretariat of Environment and Territorial Development (SEMADET) and the La Primavera Forest Public Decentralized Organization.

Jalisco Environment Secretary Paola Bauche Petersen said the activities are part of a state strategy that set a goal of planting 250,000 trees across the state in 2026. According to the official, between 215,000 and 220,000 trees had been planted so far.

CRT President Aurelio López Rocha highlighted the participation of government authorities, citizens and productive sectors in conservation efforts at the protected natural area.

The tequila industry’s involvement in reforestation dates back to 2021, when it began providing financial resources through the Trust for the Administration of Jalisco’s Forest Development Program (FIPRODEFO) to support the production of pine and oak seedlings.

Since then, the partnership has contributed to the production of more than 200,000 trees, which have been used in reforestation projects carried out in coordination with the La Primavera Forest organization.

Tree production

Jesús Cortés Aguilar, director of FIPRODEFO, said the La Chamacuera nursery produced 60,000 trees this year with support from the Tequila Regulatory Council. The seedlings were allocated to protected natural areas, the Tapalpa mountain region and other environmentally significant sites.

Gabriel Vázquez Sánchez, director of the La Primavera Forest organization, said the reforestation season for 2026 concluded with the tequila industry’s participation in the event.

The organization had set a goal of planting 25,000 trees during the season, most of them produced at the La Chamacuera nursery.

Employees of tequila companies and organizations within the agave-tequila production chain took part in the event, along with CRT board members and staff, their families and government officials.

Sustainability strategy

The CRT said the tequila industry has maintained a sustainability strategy since 2016 based on seven areas of action: industry decarbonization, efficient water use, sustainable agricultural practices, waste treatment, social programs, regional economic development and a zero-deforestation commitment for tequila.

The La Primavera Forest event adds to the reforestation initiatives the industry has carried out in recent years through collaboration with environmental authorities and forestry organizations in Jalisco.
