CRT and AMPPI Sign Agreement to Strengthen the Tequila Designation of Origin

Zapopan, Jalisco, March 9, 2025.- The Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT for its acronym in Spanish) and the Mexican Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AMPPI for its acronym in Spanish) signed a collaboration agreement to strengthen the protection of the Tequila Designation of Origin and define joint strategies in intellectual property matters.

Francisco González García, First Vice President of the CRT’s Board of Directors, highlighted that this agreement will help create training and updating opportunities for the tequila industry. “Protecting our Designation of Origin is a constant challenge, and to achieve this, it is essential to have the best legal knowledge and tools, along with the commitment of all involved parties,” he stated.

Meanwhile, José Alejandro Luna Fandiño, President of AMPPI, emphasized the importance of joining efforts to ensure a high level of protection for Designations of Origin in Mexico. “Tequila is a success story and a model for intellectual property protection, representing a source of pride for Mexico,” he noted.

Following the signing of the agreement, a working session was held with representatives from both organizations to discuss their roles and the challenges faced by the tequila industry in intellectual property protection.

Mexico has 18 Designations of Origin, supporting more than 500,000 families. Tequila was the first recognized in the country in 1974, driving the need for ongoing training and updates in legal protection for its commercialization and export.
