Morelia, Michoacán.- The Government of Michoacán presented the Michoacán Award for National Origin Product 2025 to the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT) during the 2025 oriGIn Biennial, acknowledging its ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting tequila as one of Mexico’s most emblematic products.
Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla delivered the award to Aurelio López Rocha, president of the CRT. The recognition came in the form of a handcrafted piece made of hammered copper from Santa Clara del Cobre, decorated with silver and a woven sash, enclosed in a cedar box crafted in Cuanajo, Pátzcuaro—an homage to Michoacán’s artisan legacy.
In a gesture of mutual recognition, the CRT presented the governor with its highest honor, the “Águila en Vuelo” (Eagle in Flight) award. Designed by Mexican sculptor León Fernández, the piece merges two national symbols: the eagle and the agave, representing pride of origin and the elevation of tradition.
“We are very grateful for this Águila en Vuelo award, a symbol of freedom, vision, and perseverance. My sincere thanks to the Tequila Regulatory Council for this meaningful distinction,” said Governor Ramírez Bedolla during the ceremony.
The governor highlighted the relevance of products with Denomination of Origin (DO) or Geographical Indication (GI), underscoring how these distinctions reflect not only territorial uniqueness but also the human value behind each creation.
“It is the highest form of recognition for a product that embodies its land and the human quality that gives it a distinctive essence,” he added.
As part of the event, the CRT also gifted the governor a commemorative Tequila Lab bottle, presented in an Olinalá box. The product represents the collaboration of 64 tequila producers, combining two Mexican denominations of origin to celebrate history, identity, and craftsmanship.
“This gesture expresses our gratitude for your administration’s support of Geographical Indications and Denominations of Origin in Michoacán,” stated López Rocha. “Your leadership has been key in fostering legality and prestige around our protected names. This piece stands as a symbol of our continued partnership with Michoacán and its people.”
Currently, 30 municipalities in Michoacán belong to the official Tequila Denomination of Origin territory, reinforcing the state’s role as a cornerstone in the development of one of Mexico’s most recognized beverages worldwide.
